    Our lifestyle, mental and health condition, or even an inadequate sleeping environment can be behind sleepless nights. Restful sleep is a great treasure, but fortunately, we know the way to achieve it.

    You can only rest with a "calmed" soul; the thoughts constantly swirling in our heads are unfortunately not good for us. So, let's calm down and not stress! If we succeed, we will fall asleep more easily and wake up less often at night.

    Blue light (phone, TV, tablet, etc.) disrupts our biorhythm and keeps us awake even when we should have been asleep long ago. What is the reason for this? It prevents the production of the sleep hormone, melatonin, in our body. The evening should be a completely screen-free period if we want what's best for ourselves!

    Caffeine can help with wakefulness, but not at all with falling asleep. The effect of coffee, energy drinks, or even cola can last up to 6-8 hours, stimulating. It delays falling asleep, and if we do manage to fall asleep, we will sleep much more superficially, which, let's face it, is not very restful.

    If possible, don't have a huge feast in the evening, especially don't eat heavy foods then! It's almost impossible to fall asleep with a full stomach because digestion is actively working, and until your stomach manages to deal with all the food, you won't feel comfortable.

    Do we constantly feel tense and unable to relax? Inner tension must be released somehow, otherwise, we won't be able to rest properly, and we'll wake up even more tired in the morning than when we went to bed the night before. For example, yoga or relaxation music can help a lot.

    Consistency is restful, so it's worth developing a sleep routine! Our body cannot adapt to a disturbed sleep rhythm; just a weekend "slip" or not going to bed and waking up at the usual time can already cause problems.

    Only a pleasantly tired body can rest peacefully. If we don't get enough physical fatigue, we move little, and don't exercise, we shouldn't be surprised if we have trouble falling asleep and our nights are restless. Everyone needs a little movement!

    No, alcohol doesn't help with falling asleep! It makes you sleepy, but it significantly worsens the quality of sleep, making it "fragmented," causing us to wake up more often, and with a groggy head. Furthermore, it dehydrates, which is not at all healthy for our body.

    Health problems (e.g., insomnia, sleep apnea, or hormonal changes) can also cause sleep disorders, which result in chronic fatigue. When exhausted, we don't function at all like when we are well-rested, and if we don't address the problem, the whirlpool will drag us further and further down.

    What happens if the level of the stress hormone, cortisol, is high, and the level of the sleep hormone, melatonin, is low? We will have great difficulty falling asleep, and even if we succeed, the rest will not be of good quality, and early waking is almost guaranteed.

    It is very rare for only one of the above factors to be present; usually, several cause sleep problems. Therefore, it is worth finding a solution for each of them for a restful night.

    Improve our sleeping environment, sleep well!

    1. Choose the right mattress!

    The ideal mattress is not too hard, not too soft, and adequately supports the spine. Don't be surprised if you constantly toss and turn on your old, worn-out mattress, wake up frequently, and your back and lower back hurt in the morning!
